jackstands damaging car?

Not if you put the stands in a solid place. In the back, putting them under the axle tubes would be the same as the car sitting on the tires. In the front, I like to catch the stand under the lower control arms. It would also be a good idea to put the base of the stands on a 3/4" piece of plywood so they don't sink into the asphalt or soft ground.

My only other concern is where the car is located while it's on jackstands. I'd hesitate to leave it that way for ong if it was in my driveway, or in a apartment complex. If it's in the backyard, or the garage it's fine. Just concerned about anyone messing with it, so be sure the tires and wheels are not on it if you leave it jacked up.
Also be sure to not put it any higher than necessary. More stable the lower the jackstands are.

Do you have the jacks turned sideways too so the car won't fall over? I hear ya, I almost had a car fall on me as a kid, father had a cheap jack, cheap jackstands, I was pulling my trans in his garage, I got out from under it when the car hit the ground without the front wheel on it. It fell towards me too. It was close. I have very stable stands now, although they are borrowed. I need to get some good ones.

I use 3 ton jackstands like these:

I used to have hose little ones shaped from round tubing with cross pinned holes. They were a pain to adjust, and pretty flimsy. These are super solid, easy to adjust, and pretty darn cheap!

Jackstands? We don't need no stinkin jackstands! Don't try this at home, it looks a little dangerous. Although he does have the safety rock in place.
