Being from back in that time, I have not heard of that, things were very simple and the VIN tag did mean allot more. There was just usually the build sheet, the window sticker and VIN. There was less fraud as to special edition cars like SS Z28 etc.
Now you could order a Z28 with stripe deletes, I assume you could order with emblem deletes too. I know mine has the column shift & there was no center console.
The main reason that outside appearance items were deleted was insurance costs, for years many of us had our cars registered as a Camaros. Cause back then it was all about the "go", show was just pretty
(sorry a little off subject)
One of the things I don't understand today is the "Z28 Tribute car" or a "Z28 Clone". Mechanically all a Z28 was really some different springs (F41), a higher horsepower engine (L48), maybe a rear sway bar, (or it was the same rear sway bay), a different 4 speed manual. OK OK there are some other things too but for the most part.....
I seriously doubt some used car salesman will go to the lengths to get the "correct" parts in a "Clone". They just want to sell it and make a few more dollars.

yes my camaro has bucket seats with no console and column shift. i have looked more into the car and on the trim tag says the original color was mulsanne* blue, and thats the current color of the car so maybe i have a rare colunm shift.
