I bought my first camaro in 78, it was a blue 76. I couldn't afford the $125 a month payments and had to sell her. Now in 2011 I bought a 79 Berlinetta, white, factory ttop, 97000 miles and NEVER been in a body shop. She is a sweet ride!!!! I put on new tires and shocks. I do notice that the brake fluid looks really dirty. What is the best way to replace the brake fluid, and is the regular DOT3 fluid what I use?

hay welcome to the forum. i moved your thread to the 2nd gen section, should get some good help here. post up an intro and pic of the ride in the itroductions section when you can. oh and read the rules too, good to have you with us and enjoy.

 

You can gravity feed it. It takes forever. Or pressure bleed. Or get a $30 hand vacuum pump. This is what I use. The pump sucks the fluid out. Just make sure you keep the master cylinder topped off and check it regularly. It will go dry pretty fast when sucking fluid out.

 

I also use a vacuum pump, but I use an old turkey baster to suck the master dry first. Then I fill with new fluid and suck it through the system. Harbor Freight has decent pump.

 

The vacuum pump works great to swap out your brake fluid. I bought one from Harbor Freight that uses your air compressor (item # 92924) and you don't have to hand pump. It works very well. As BB427 says, suck out the old fluid from the master cylinder first and then keep it topped of as Nomad says. Great advise. I used Valvoline synthetic DOT 4 fluid but DOT 3 meets the requirements.
