If it's a steel hood, then like mentioned above they probably sent you the wrong ones.If it is a fiberglass hood, you may still have the wrong springs, because there are springs for the 2" fiberglass hood, then there are a bit heavier spring for a 4" hood.

Appreciate the help...I even called Classic Industries and checked...they only sell one type of springs for years 70-81...doesnt make sense... Tech. explained the springs they sell are for a stock hood only...not cowl....Of course they told me this after I purchased the hood and springs from them....

I have the same problem with my fiberglas hood. It has the supposedly correct springs but I had it come down on me when I first got the car. This is the solution I found. Have someone hold the hood in the up position, drill a hole through the two sections and insert a pin. It is easy to do, cheap and it works. Just make sure you remember to take them out when you close the hood.

I switched to a cowl hood and I can tell you they are not heavier than a stock hood. In fact they are lighter. All the new replacement sheetmetal is lighter than stock Chevy, and weighs less. My new cowl hood works just fine with 40 yr. old stock springs.
I'd say the springs Classic sells are defective. I'd send them back and buy from another source like NPD.
