Default Help finding the engine casting number and transmission

I am trying to know my car a little better. I have already bought several manuals and a wiring diagram. Right now I am battling the issue of the back-up (reverse) light. I think I need a new switch. For this I need to know what kind of transmission I have.

So my question: how does someone who has very little experience find the type of engine and transmission? I know the engine is not the original and I think the transmission is the same. I would really like to know more about my car so any help you can give me would really be of great assistance.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions about other stuff I should know, please let me know.
