hard top to convertible?
First post here. I don't currently own a camaro, but I am curious about something.
I want to build a convertible project car. I was all set to get an old VW Cabrio, since I am familiar with and enjoy working on VW's.
My wife wanted me to build something more classic, so since I've always loved the 67-69 Camaro's...
Anyway, I'm looking to get a "junker" because my enjoyment lies in the knuckle-busting and research that goes into doing it yourself.
Is it possible, and is there any information on taking a hard top roof and putting in a convertible roof?
It may not be worth the effort, I'm just curious.
Thanks.

i don't know how much work it will be to convert a hard top to a convertible, but i do know that first gen convertible hulls are available. it is just from the firewall to the back of the cab. these hullls are brand new. you will still need a frame and the rest of the skin and the actual soft top, but you will have a brand new hull that you wouldn't have to hack on and figure out the brackets and such.

I would imagine that I could find a frame from any 67-69, and build from there starting with the convertible "hull".
Fabricating a conversion from hard to soft top did seem a bit unusual and labor intensive.
It will probably be quite awhile until I lose my "noob" status here.
IMO it would not be worth the effort or cost. You are talking about a tremendous amount of work and if it's not done right, the car will be scrap. Like was said above new convertible shells are avalible as is almost every other part for a 1st gen Camaro. It's still alot of work but in the end you will have a basicly "new" car.
the repro hulls cost about 10 grand for a first gen. it would not be worth it to buy that. I would buy a convertible junker and work on that. Or the coups look real nice to so just stick with that. People have done the coupe to convertible projects. I have seen some on ebay with mopars. Sometimes people do it with the 71 cuda's since they bring such a good buck. I wouldent attempt it, atleast with the camaro experience that I have and it seems that you have. I am deffinatley not a body man so I would not attempt it. Good luck though
