what transmission? i assume your talking about the rear differential gears. 342 or 373 would be a couple good choices.

I bet he means gear drrive timing sets.
There are so many choices in gear drive timing today, and most are good quality. I would stay away from Pro Comp, as I've already see a friend's set go bad in less than 1500 miles on the engine. The Pro Form is a good set, but it's pretty quiet, if you want the whine. All the big names like Edelbrock, Comp Cams, etc. are good, but seem to be twice as much money.
I'm running a Cloyes in my SBC. It's great quality, and midrange priced. They run around $155 at Summit, but I found mine new on Ebay for $125.

The best one is sitting on the shelf that was pulled after the owner got tired of it. Thats where most end up.

An hour drive down a road with a set speed and no stops with a drive will test your patients. We wanted to pull into Autozone for a quick fix once coming home from the races. If there would have been a two piece timing cover on the car it would have happened right in the parking lot. Timing chain and some borrowed tools.

We have a summit gear drive in our big block, granted the car sees very limited street use and mostly a track car, but a gear drive won't stretch after awhile, and as far as timing goes, where you put it is where it stays. As far as which one to go with, I strongly recommend a gear set with a dog bone in the center, what i mean by that is it is a 4 gear setup, not a 3 gear. What we also did was drill a thiry thousanths hole in the driver's side oil gallery plug behind the cam gear, just gives the set a little more oil. just my 2 cents worth. Bob

Hotrods should be noisy! They should scare women and small children, and make non car adults wonder what's going on with your car!
Gear drives always cause controversy when mentioned on forums. Most people who are against them have never even owned a car with a gear drive set in it. I've had several, and my present 327 in the gasser has one. It's the loudest I've ever owned, and I still like it! It has quieted down some after 5,000 miles put on it this year, but still very noticeable. I wouldn't take it out unless it somehow failed. I like the precise timing, and the sound. I drive a lot more miles than most people do with their play cars, and longer distances than most of my friends. It hasn't bothered me to hear it "sing" as I'm cruising down the freeway.
I've put them in three of my buddy's SBC this year, as they liked mine and wanted a gear drive too. But I don't have one in the BBC in my Camaro, as I wanted it as quiet as possible inside the car.

I have a Lunati gear drive set in the 327 I'm building. Don't have an informed opinion about the sound yet, still waiting to hear it run.
