Default Electrical problem, engine won't turn off!

I have recently removed a after market alarm, as it was never used. I thought it was just internal sensors, but it would seem that it was wired into the ignition system. I have kept all the wires so just need to work out what to do with them. My car does have very bad wiring, as over the years people have been adding and removing things and leaving wires hanging all over the place.
With the Alarm removed the engine turns over, but no power to the ignition. There is one wire that when connected to the battery will start the engine, but you can't switch the engine off with the key!, so I have to remove the battery connection.
Please can someone give me some tips to try with the other wires. So far I have tried earthing them out, shorting them together and also shorting to the battery but no combination shuts the engine off!.

Many thanks from Luke

You have several problems - if you remove the battery and engine dies, alternator is not working.
These may help, different year, I know, but same color for function.

Thanks for your reply

The alternator is working ok, when I remove the power it's cutting the live feed to the ignition system, so the engine cuts off. I know this might not be the correct way, but it's how someone has wired my car in the past.I need to know basic information on how the turning the key off shuts down the engine, so I can work out what to do with the wires that I have left over from the old alarm system.

Thanks

The ignition system should have its own power source form the ign switch.

turning the key off cuts power to the ignition. you should have a wire hot all the time going to the ignition switch. you should have a wire, connection at the ignition switch that has no power when switch is off and power when switch is to the on position.

Sounds to me like you've connected the ignition to a constant hot 12v., and you need to find the ignition switched hot. If you don't have a test light you should get one. Connect it to the wires in question and find the one that turns the light off when the key is turned off. Once you determine which wires are switched hots, then you can pull the ignition fuse and see which of them goes dead with the fuse pulled.

Thanks for all the replies, I have managed to sort it out now. I have traced all the extra wires from the old alarm and removed them. I found were they had hacked into the ignition wiring and re-joined the cable back together and every thing is working ok!.
You wouldn't believe the amount of un-used wires that I have removed!. There is still a few strange wiring hacks under the dash, but that will have to wait for another time to tidy up
