Default drag racing

i have a 1979 camaro with a 350 transmission, and a 350 engine, its got a high rise manifold with a matching carb, and a flo-master exaust no air conditioning and anything i don't really need i have taken out if i could get to, i'm not sure what else ther may be in there, it anyway one of my friends from auto shop says he just bought a 1975 camaro with no engine and he's going to drop in a bored out 350 with nothing else so a 383 i wasn't scared until i heard it was a stick, so he asked if in a couple months i wanted to go to the nearest drag track and find out who's camaro is faster, who's do you think is faster, regardless of experience, any suggestions that don't have to do with taking out the engine or are super expensive?

Some of your post dosen't make any sense. I'll run my auto against any one with a manual trans. But we would need to know more.... Engine sizes, comp ratio, cam, heads, intake, carb or carbs, gearing, and if anyone is going to use a bottle.

It all depends on how the 383 was built. But, keep in mind that a 350 cannot be bored out to 383 size without going through the water jacket. A 383 is a stroked 350, which all things being the same, will have more low end torque torque, and most likely more top end power. It all depends on how they are built, and there are no stock 383s.
Go ta drag strip and find out who is quicker and faster. It is fun, win or loose. You get real readings, and there are no arguments with the timing lights.

Yes there was. There were two actually. The RB and B engines both had 383s in their lot. But they were also big blocks, not small blocks.

The Mopar 383s were used in Chrysler products. GM never put a 383 in a Chevy, although now they are selling a 383 crate engine.

First off you are reading to much in cubic inch and not enough on how the cars are setup.

When you build any engine you need to know what its primary use is going to be. When building a street engine you have balance drivability/Comfort/Mileage with horse power.

Another thing is a street car that is designed to do quarter mile will be thought out from radiator to rear tires. Just putting a high rise intake and matching carb could hurt your quarter mile times. The single plane high rises likes high RPMs if you are running a automatic with 2:73 rear I would not be surprised if you quarter mile times increased with that intake/carb. Sure it will feels faster at the higher RPMs but how much time did you add to get to the higher RPMs? Also from the factory the early 350 varied a good bitthe first 350 1967was 290HP in 1975 the base 350 was rate 140HP.

When I use to build circle track engines I use to convert 350’s to 383. A 383 is basically a crank for a Chevy Small block 400 in a 350. At lower RPMs the 383 makes more horse power. For less then 2K we used to build a near 500 HP engine, But it was by NO means streetable IMO. Our reasoning was when your on a budget its cost more to go high RPMS. That is what a 350 or 327 can do that a 383 can’t. High RPMs. But any car with a 327 would be setup differently the one with a 400 or 383.

Note: Man, I hope I didn’t get single and duel plane intake mixed up. I admit when I used to build the race engine the owner to the team spec the motors out I just built them and did all the head work as he directed.
