Your mechanic robbed you. Sorry to be so blunt. Non of your components need to be "built to handle" 300hp. Every stock component on the car can handle that. I'm not sure what LT1's made for horsepower but I'd bet it was well over 300. A TH350 with laugh at 300 and so will a stock 10 bolt with a simple GM posi. Its the 500 leaf springs that set me off. Detroit Speed, a company I think way over prices stuff only wants $385 for theirs.

I have a suspension set to kill. Capable of sustained 1.2G loads. Front and rear springs,HD shackles, shocks, control arms,Moog steering components, shocks, subframe connectors, solid body mounts, 1 1/4 front sway bar, adjustable rear bar and G- braces w/ a cowl brace. It came to delivered $3300. Seriously!

I'm not ripping on you directly so please don't take my comments personally. I won't have 25K in the whole car. I am at about the same point as you except I don't need any sheet metal. Currently I'm sitting on all new suspension, wheels and a 475HP 383. Total cost is about 8 grand. I hate when people get taken advantage of by "pro" builders.

Such in depth answers and conversation . Shame I don't understand most of it >.> Lol. But I got enough to know a 77 is the one for me

Just curious what you guys think 15kish will get me ($)? I'm guessing not many people out there are gonna restore a 77 and leave the engine old and stock, which may be a problem as getting a standard 6L chevy insured is already 2k a year for me. If someones put a huge block in it it might be nigh on impossible...

But I'm am a bit confused, how is it that Chevy only got like 180 (was it?) Bhp from a 6L engine, and is it unfair to compare that to modern day cars? My Golf is 1.9L 150bhp, smaller engine but more bhp, how would you compare the speed of a good chevy? It all confuses me :s

If you spend $15k on one, you can more than likely get one that is in excellent shape. Economy sucks so people are taking big hits on them.

If I remember the late 70's early 80's manufactures were toning cars down so they got better mileage. In 1973 we had the oil crisis and cars were lined up for miles to get gas. I think we were still feeling the effects from that.

Oil, always seems to be an ongoing issues with that, funny thing is, there is no shortage. In 2006, I remember paying $0.25 a gallon for fuel in the Middle East and it was over $3.00 at home. I’m not math genius but even I can see the number don’t add up!

$15k will get you one of the finest '77 Z28's around! There were several late 70's I watched go across Meacham auctions the other day in the $8500-$10,000 range, so even with auction fees theydidn't reach $15k.
I see nice late 70's go around my area every month for under $8,000. There's a '78 Z28 on our local Craigslist with 70,000 original miles that looks great for $7,000 OBO.

Yes, and I'm sure a little more money there. But shipping would cost around $1,000 British pounds, and still be well under his price budget.

The 70 LT1 was rated at 350 HP.. the SS had a detuned LT1 that was 330HP and the Stock 350 4V was 325... all running through a stock 10 bolt... Heck my last Camaro had the V6 10 bolt and was pushing over 300 HP... the 10 bolt is way to over looked as a performance rearend... if you are not shocking it with NOs it will handle close to 400 HP. a great reason to go with a 12 bolt is to get the front to rear weight ratio to something better for handling... but $25k? in ALABAMA? it there a cratching my head happy face?

Exactly, none of the stock components need to be "built" to handle 300hp.
