rydeer, although I am not happy with the fit around the ends, I ran into more problems around the gagues and steering column. Also with the fitment of the under dash peices around the column.

I was about to order a pad for my car. 77Nomad I followed the link you provided. It left me some unanswered questions. I had already removed my pad and considered a custom cover. I removed the vinyl part from the hard plastic. I had the typical shrinkage along the Pass side top. I also had shrinkage in the top left over the guage cluster. This I had to cut to remove the guages. I could reinstall the pad to the backing if I thought that a cover would be a better fit. Does anyone know if the cover extends to the guage cluster? Do I even need to put the existing pad back on?
I did have some breakage on the far right hand side of the bard plastic.

Yes, the caps cover everything that the original pad covers. I wouldn't put one on with no pad under it. I'd want enough pad left to index the cover, and support it at least 60%. I think it's important to have that, or it might warp under extremely hot summer temps when the sun bakes through the winshield.
Here's a link to NPD so you can check their caps. P-14 of the interior section:

Thank BB. It seems as though I'm going to be doing a lot of work to make this right. Not just a bolt in. I guess I'll go with the cheaper route and reassemble my old pad and use a cover. Thanks again Sham! for the good advise. Hard lesson learned though.

As an off note.... I was lucky to catch this thread. I've been in the "NEW PROJECTS SECTION LATELY." I havn't been looking at the 2'nd gen section as it is still seperated. Glad I came back and noticed it.

Thanks for making this thread, I was thinking about purchasing a new dash, but I'm going the dash cap route.

Well I ordered the cap from NPD. I guess if I'm not going to be completly happy I'll go the cheaper route. I'll update when It comes in.

So the dash pad arrived. Big box!! Wrapped in X-mas paper.

I'm all excited I can put the interior together and be done with the dash.

I unwrap and it's broken in the middle and scuffed at the pass end

I had removed the pad on mine from the hard plastic backing. I'm going to reinstall it. I will also have to remov e the bad parts. I have buckling along the top. Wrinkles on the pass side. And shrinkage where the instrument panel sits. Previous owner had installed screws along the top to hold it down on the dash.

The new pad looks like it will cover everything. It comes with a tube of silicone, not any double sticky tape. I'm going to call NPD now.

Ok you've talked me into it. I'm going to get one for my 78' dash. Then I will have a good 78' and 80' dash. I can swap them as I please. But really I just wanted to keep my car like a 78. That was my first. The later dash never did it for me. Plus I have all the stuff to make it work.
