NOT in 1st or 2nd Gen Camaros they aren't. Long tube headers are the way to go.
And, pipes in the 2.25"-2.5" range will be more than sufficient, unless you have an engine pumping out an excess of 400 h.p. Obviously, the more free flowing the muffler the better, but it's up to your tolerance level for noise.

I know, I know... I always thought that the long tube were better for high end RPM use and the shorties were good for low end torque. The reasoning behind this was that the shorties keep the gases around the combustion chamber and helped with filling on longer duration cams that had a shorter dynamic stroke. The long tube headers kept the gases flowing at higher RPM and the gases weren't needed due to the high RPM filling. Atleast that was what I was told. After I posted I just did a quick google search and I guess what I was told was totally wrong. Oh wells.

so when i get my 383 stroker with 450 HP and torque im going to also get new headers but what size pipes should i go with then?

3" duals with a cross pipe.
Whose headers you looking at?

im looking at hooker headers but ive heard some good things about summit brand headers..and there around $100..are they worth getting or should i just stick with hooker? im also getting the ceramic coated headers

i also have dual exhuast with flowmaster mufflers but im not sure what the size pipes i have

and what size primary tubes on the header should I get?

Not saying what headers you should get, but I put these on mine (ceramic coated): Flowtech Afterburner Headers
My painted headers were no longer painted, they turned into a nice rust coating. And mine isn't a daily driver either. These have a different design, with a 4th tube coming in after the other three. The concept sounded interesting, so I thought I'd give them a shot, since I already went the "normal" header route. Whatever headers you go with, you'll be a lot happier with coated ones.

1 5/8". Going to a bigger tube could actually hurt your bottom end torque.
That's why I went with the headers that I did. According to their claims, the 1 5/8" tubes give the bottom end torque, and the 4th primary tube dumping into the main pipe after the other three is supposed to help upper rpm performance.
