honestly your better off jsut trying to find a new rear end with everything all together, the hassle of putting in new gear is just a pain in the but, and i really don't think that anybody would recommend that just tossing in new gears with the stock axles, the stock axles are mad for that certain type of gear, they will work for the newer gears but they won't hold up as good as the new ones made for that gear will. i found a posi rear end around my area with 3.23 gears and a disc brake conversion kit to it, and i gave the guy 70 bucks for it, everything inside it was mint, the guy jsut had it siiting around for years and years and years and wanted to get rid of it, you just have to find the deals, especially the want ad's, theres a lot of stuff under the parts and accessories area, don't waste your time with putting in new gears, you might regret it in the end.

I agree with the above. I just completely rebuilt a rear end for my 70. It really kicks *** now( richmond 3:23 gears, moser axles, auburn posi) but it was a major pain in the *** and the wallet, (sand blasting, paint) the pinion gear is VERY tricky--(crush sleeve, backlash). If you do replace the gears, get new axles and a master bearing kit. If you have the time, look for one thats already done as suggested above.
