Default Holley 4165 Carb

hey guys,

ok I think I pulled the correct number off of my Holley carb and compared it to the list someone here directed me too. I took off the air filter and found a number on the horn, it says LIST - 6853. If Im reading the chart correctly that means its a 650CFM Model 4165.

Now I know nothing about carbs. This is all new ground for me. I do know that this carb has not seen any love in a long time and it needs it ! I have looked it over and found that it seems to have a manual choke (cable goes into the cabin to a black **** under the dash?) And Ive found that that cable and **** seem to be pretty locked up and dont do much. Ive also noticed a couple vacuum ports that are either capped or dont have anything going to them.

So advice needed. What rebuild kit would i need to go all through this thing and make it perfect again ? And does anyone have a good referance source for how to work on these and tune them, book, website, pdf, willing to come teach me in exchange for beer ?

here are the kits ive been looking at . . .

Summit :
AED Performance 4165 - AED Ultimate Performance Carburetor Kits - Overview - SummitRacing.com

JEGS :
Holley 37-605 Holley Carburetor Rebuild Kits

Ebay :
Holley 37-605 For 4165 carbs JEGS | eBay

Anything anyone can offer would be hugely helpful. Thanks.

THere should be no unused or unplged ports. A You tube search would help you. Or

Haynes makes a holley manual, that covers complete rebuilds on pretty much every holley carb. There are alot of others as well, but that is the one i used so it's the only one i know about for sure.

Actually there may be a plugged port or two, depending on what accessories you use, and whether you use metered vacuum or straight vacuum. Most use metered off the side of the metering block, so the vacuum line at the base would be plugged. If you don't have power brakes, then the large port fo that would also be plugged.
Here's the Holley instructions for your carb, so you can see them before you buy the kit.

You'll want a gallon of carb cleaner to dip parts in also if you don't have any. There's a ton of great info at Holley's tech site on tuning and performance changes:
