Carburetor flame
I finally got my 350 sbc cranking and misfiring again. After several months of no response from the motor this is huge progress for me ha. The issue now is that obviously the Motor doesn’t wanna stay running and misfires before it’ll shut off. And on my last crank I saw a flame form at the carburetor, it was small so I was able to blow it with just air. This is after I just gave it a ballpark timing. Took out plug #1 and felt for compression, waited til TDC and 0 at balancer. Installed distributor carefully pointing at cyl 1 and made sure it slotted in the little slot and sat all the way down. From what I can tell it seems like the flame would be a result of timing issue but I really doubt I have it 180 degrees off. Also should mention that I don’t have the carburetor fastened down all the way just lined up with some bolts so it’s loose. Thoughts?

if it did anything near running your timing is close, No way is it 180 degs out.
Back firing can also be caused by a lean condition. Lean mixture can be causes by a vacuum leak. A loose carb will cause a vacuum leak.
Make sure the gasket is good, the back fire may have damaged it. torque the carb down and verify all your hoses are installed or plugged.
Try again.
