Question Can an aftermarket stereo be put in a '78?

I am unsure about whether or not a new stereo can be put in because the dash is built only for the stock stereo. Anybody know?

Absolutely it can, but the opening needs to be modified unless you buy a very expensive stereo designed to fit into the old style opening. I put a new type stereo in both my '71 Camaro, and my '69 Chevy Suburban, and both had old **** style radios.
I just used the new bracket box as a template and laid it over the opening. Then traced around it with a marker and carefully cut the hole with a hacksaw blade in a handle designed to hold blades. Once I got it cut out I test fitted the new bracket and filed the edge of the hole until it was a snug fit. Then just installed it and it was great.
If you're careful cutting you'll see that the round holes from the ***** aren't quite covered by most new stereo's bracket inserts, but once the stereo is installed it's larger size completely covers the small edge of exposed hole that wasn't removed when you cut the hole out.

Also try and find a wire harness adapter, don't hack up the wires hping you have the right ones.

hell yea. i have a pioneer cd player in mine with and HD radio box so i can see what song is playing on the radio. Also, it has the ipod hook up and a usb port for some reason. Find a good audio place and they should be able to do it for you no problem. Also, if you aren't quite confident with wiring, some places like car toys and best buy will offer free installation with the purchase of a cd player.

mine looks exactly like the one pictured above. The deck sits nicely in there by the use of a "dash kit".

Car Dash Installation Kits: Car Audio Stereo Dash Installation Kits - Best Buy

best buy has a million of em so you might want to check there first. they may even be able to order one for you. and like i said before...buy a deck there and they will install for free.

That USB port is so you can charge your digital camera on your way to the car show!
