YouTube - ‪Buyers Guide --- Never buy a "Rusty" Camaro or Trans Am again!‬‏

Here is a video that should give you an idea of what to check for on a 2nd gen.

well i found a 5 and a 6 speed for around 2 grand, is that a good deal ? or should i be looking for a 4 speed ? And its not like i want to make my car original, i want something fast and that looks nice. Im mostly likely will paint it black with white racing stripes and some chrome rims .

If you found just a 5-6 spd trans for $2k, then it's not a good deal. If you're saying you found a car and those trans for $2k then it's a great deal. Don't get the cart before the horse! If you're looking for a car, then look a lot before you choose one; then start looking for parts. Don't look for parts for a car you don't even own yet!

+1 you'll end up paying to much for stuff you most likely won't be able to use or spend more money making it work. Be patient and shop for a decent car first.

Its good to know what you want when buying your first car but you can't get too picky with a car thats 30+ years old. The main thing i would be concerned about right now is how much this car is gonna cost you in the long run. Insurance costs? Gas costs? Now i'm 17 and i have a good full time job to be able to keep my car on the road but it sure costs alot for gas. I drive mine everyday to work and i'm going through like 80bucks every 5 days in gas. If you don't have a job dont even start looking.

The second thing is that there even though there are mostly auto's out there wait for manual to come up for sale. So many of these 2nd gens change hands that there always new ones coming up for sale. I watched kijiji for at least a year emailing and doing research before i found mine and i'm sure glad i did. I almost bought a 80 Z28 4speed ttop that didn't run and had been sitting for 18 years for 8000 before i knew how many better ones were out there lol.

I know what you're saying, but as I said it's too much money for a trans. They are out there for much less. And again, don't even worry about the cost of a trans until you've looked long and hard for a good car. Then sit down and make a list of things you want to do to it and how you plan to fund each.
You need to be able to distinguish between different trannies, before jumping into one. Some 5 spds. can be purchased for a few hundred dollars, but they aren't T56's, and might not be what you really want.
It will only discourage you and turn things sour for you if you don't approach this hobby right from the start. Great to have a dream, just keep it in check, and remember to be patient.
