should be a reverse light switch, on the column (im thinkin down under the dash)or in the console, check to see if u have power coming into it, then put in reverse and see if u have power coming out.

if the shifter is at the column it would be there, if its at the console it will be in there. not real sure what they look like in your year but being a 2nd gen it could be under the hood. the switch also controls the starter so the car wont start in gear. at least thats the way i remember it. follow the shift linkage from shifter to trans and ull find it.

If I remember correctly the switch is under the dash on the column regardless of which style shifter you have. I had a look at mine years ago (floor shifter) and since it operates the indicator in the dash the switch was on the column. Should be on the top side under the dash.
You can take a jumper wire and jumper the switch to see if it starts when jumped. Might just need adjusting after the trans was out.

crap--i cant find any switch,i did trace the wire from the backup light to the fusebox and ohmed it and it is good from light to there, but cant tell what goes on from there, what actually sends power to the light--is there supposed to be a switch on the shifter or tranny?---i can't see anything that would even cause it to come on when putting it in reverse---THANKS

did u look under the dash? follow the steering column down to below the dash bottom. take the cover off from under there if u have one and that should show it. bb427 knows more than i for this yr and thats were he says it is, i think hes right.
