Are you talking a 1968 396, or are you talking about a newer 350 stroked to a 396? i think the 1968's were rated at 375 hp, so i would go with a stroked 350 to a 396, with decent flowing heads, and a good bottom end setup, that should give you about 450hp and probably even more torque.

we have been over this... The bored and stroked 350 is a 383 stroker, not a 396, the 396is a big block chevy

anyhow, I would put a 350 in it and have a nicely built sb for cheap that puts out a good 450 hp.

It should run you about 2000-2500

Good luck, tell us your opinion

Hell, if you got the bux, a ZZ 572/720R big block making 720HP should move yor car smartly. You need to put toghether a budget, figure out how much you want to spend, and make a decision. A small block will give you more performance for the same cost; however, a really big block will always outpower a small block. By the way, there are 396 small blocks available, but they are usually built for competition purposes and to meet regulations. Google "396 sbc"

Basically it's a matter of personal preferance.
You can go up to 406 cid on a 350 block bored .155 over and a stroke of 3.75(which is a 400 crank). You can go even higher than that I am pretty sure, but then you are going to have to spend more and possibly have an engine that won't be all too reliable. Go with a 350 punched out to a 383, it's a good balance of reliabilty(if built properly), power, and price. Then again you have to at least consider a big block for that nasty big block sound, they just are not as reliable and suck down even more gas.Hope this helps, good luck.....

Hey Brazilfutbol10, I wouldn't ever bore a 350 .155" over. I wouldn't go past .060". If you want a small block so you can turn some RPM's, go with a 400 small block (which has a 4.125" stock bore and 3.75" stock stroke as compared to a 350 of 4" bore and 3.48" stroke). If you bored the 400 .030" over, you get a 406 which is much safer due to the fact of thicker cylinder walls, so less prone to cracking when hot. NOW IF you decide to get a 400 and bore it .030" over, you can stroke it from a 3.75" stroke to a 3.875". That is what they call a 421 cu in stroker, but is actually a 418. CAN YOU IMAGINE A "421 small block stroker"?? If you put some good lightweight flat-top forged pistons, H-beam rods, good rollar cam with some bigger 215cc intakes heads with 72cc chambers with valves no smaller than 2.02"X1.60", you will have a 600 hp engine on 11:1 compression--PUMP GAS (border line)---will just have to have high octane gas with dead on timing. I have no idea about your financial side of the house, but I am about to finish my 400 small block for my 69 RS camaro here within the week with a projected 630 hp on pump gas. ALSO, if you do go flattop pistons with a big head chamber, you can still run pump gas with the 406 (TOUGH with the 421). Even after you run it after building it, you could still go down as far as a 49cc chambered head and run alcohol and REALLY run the **** out of it.............jus[8D]t my insaine long suggestions.......

350 Small blocks are great and cheap to deck out. 383 is the most popular choice (stroked 350). I personally go with the 4 bolt main. LS1 is fuel injected and you'd need the computer and wiring harness to go with it. If you have a big block in there, you can also go with an Olds or Pontiac 455. it really depends on your budget. If you want to keep it a small block, a 455 or a 400 block will do you fine.

383's have two different set ups, one with a 5.7" rod and with a 6" rod. The one with the 6" rod will give you more torque and power.

Another thing you want to consider is what transmission you're going to use. manual or automatic how many clutch plates you have or what torque converter you're gonig to use. things of that nature. rear axle strong enought to handle the horsepower?
