air shocks
alright guys, ive got some fat wheels and tires that stick out of my 70 about an inch. i love how they look but i dont want them to rub. right now it looks like theres plenty of room to where they wont rub, but theres also no weight in the car yet. if it ends up lowering at all im going to need to find a way to jack it up a little bit. i heard back in the day they used to use air shocks. i know theyre a rough ride, but would they be effective? also what are some more cons other than comfort
I used to use air shocks back in the day, it was the easy thing to do to get the tail in the air. One drawback is if you need to have air shocks to prevent the tires from bottoming out on the fenders, you could be screwed (stranded) if they ever fail. I wouldn't want to rely solely on air shocks to keep the tires clear of the fenders, but to add extra clearance is a different story. You could also put on longer shackles to give some extra lift, not the stupid long ones. And with that, you'd need less pressure in the air shocks to get to where you want it.
As long as your frame is strong, I don't see any problem. Longer shackles will relieve some of the tension on the leaf springs, so you won't have to jack as hard to get the same amount of lift. I don't know if it's available for 2nd gen's, but for mine there are slick setups for relocating the rear shocks, like this: Relocating Rear Shocks For 1967-1969 Camaros & Firebirds - Hot Rod Magazine
Hmm, now that you mention it I don't even know if the shocks are going to fit with the new wheels. I I measured before and there's about and inch and a half between the tire and the leaf spring. Do you think the outer shocks are going to fit? I have the old ones in the garage and I would check right now but im away from home.
You'll have to do some measuring of your tire back side clearance, and the size of the air shocks.
