Default Air Cleaner Ideas

I need ideas for an air cleaner.
I am currently running one of those triangle edelbroke things with the foam insert. That is the only one I could find to fit, and I had to cut the hood for it. The cut is under the factory 78 z scoop. It looks great and works as a functional ram air.

The problem is I am going to add Nitrous and I dont have a 1/4 inch of clearance. The triangle air cleaner will hit the hood with the Nitrous plate.

Any ideas? I was thinking about making something that sealed to the hood and placing the element on the hood.

I really don't want to replace the hood. I like the factory look. And I don't want to spend $500 on a fiberglass hood.

Yeah those triangle breathers are junk. It's prob that air gap intake you have limitting your options, with an edelbrock performer intake you should be able to shut the hood no prob. with a 14" air breather (chrome or aluminum), i can. Some intakes won't give you the option to leave the hood original.

I think your options are limited to either fitting the intake for nitrous without a plate, or buying a lower rise intake to get enough clearance for a plate. Even a dropped base air cleaner may get into clearance issues if you're that close already.

Dont want to go to a smaller intake, rather get a hood.

I have one of those little kn style ones. It isnt a kn but whatever. Mine has a 4" filter, but if I get a 2" filter overall height would be 3" that is 1 inch lower then the triangle one.

Might have issues with the wingnut, but I can work that out.

Thanks for the idea. I think I will try it. It is still small enough in diameter to fit under the scoop. Will have to trim the hood more but that is fine.

How will it breath with that little thing?

I went to the parts store to get a 2" air filter for my 9" and found a 14" Holley brand cleaner that is designed to drop down over the holly double pump. It atually fit on my setup. You can see the wingnut stick up through the whole in the hood and I had to cut off one of the cowl bolts but it fit.

I'm happy, got a 14" one one to fit. I will upgrade to a k/n open top for more airflow now that I know this one fits. I can just use the holly base.

Thanks.

Good, I'm glad you got it figured out.

Great! You can always use a 1/4" bolt that goes into the carb like the stud, if it's so close that a wingnut wont allow clearance. Did that on my '71 until I finally had to change when I installed a taller intake and went to a cowl hood.

it actually has like an inch of clearance, since the hood is already cut. I have no idea why I didnt think of a drop style, guess I didn't realize they made them for a double pump.

Im going to cut more of the hood for airflow and add some type of mesh to clean up the opening. Factory had some louvers or something in there.
