finally going to getmy old 81 z28 out of my garage its been put up forever 40k mile black and silver 4 speed car, i just took the old junk stock 305 out of it this weekend, and installing a mild 406 in it, can anyone help me with this question? there s two engine harnesses, the one from fuse box that has starter wires, temp wire, alt wire, ect, the one im going to use, then there s the harness that goes to the junk ecm, the harness from motor comes into car behind distributer. with the big rubber plug, the wires go into car and there s 2 plugs that plug into the ecm, and there a another harness that comes off that that goes up into dash, that unplugges too, can i just unplug all the connections and take whole harness out? what the other set of wires going to that goes up in dash? there s like 9 or so wires i think, coming out of it iknow one is probaly check engine light, any idea what rest of them are? can i just unplug whole harness and me ok>? if anyone can help it would be appreciated thanks steve

 

I would try it. Does your car have gauges? I think you'll be fine.

I can't picture it. I has to be 81 specific. The 78 doesn't and neither does the 80.

 

Yeah it is only an 81 thing,that is the first year they put the computer in them.I'm not sure what all the wires go to,but i know one is for the check engine light,and there is one that goes to the back of the speedometer,i think it is a speed sensor back there. When i bought my 81 i swapped the gauge cluster out with one from a 78 because the needles were broke on the speedo and tach and they work just like they should.I would just try to follow them up in there and see if you can find where they go.
