Default 70 RS STEERING COLUMN KEY DAMAGE

Help, how do I start my 70 camaro RS non tilt??,,,,. an attempt to steal it the night before I picked it up caused the key tumbler etc to be broken out, the "slot exposed below" is damaged and i am unable to get leverage. whats next? , im very mechanical and im just looking for a quick summary, i am up to speed on the "rotation pushes a rod toward the firewall" to cause ignition,,,how do i get to the rod to push on it,,lower the column???

The rack part of the ignition should move pretty easy. Hand pressure and a screw driver should do it with no problem unless theybent rack itself. You should be able to look into the whole left by the ignition and see the teeth of the rack. Their is a gear on the end of you tumbler your ket fits in. When you turn the key that gear forces the rack down into the ignition switch.

That rack not only pushs the ignition switch at the base of the colum it also unlock the wheel. If the rack is bent the colum will need taken completely aparts and the rack replaced. If you force it you could cause more damage to other parts in the colum.

Well i still need help, the slot that I "should be able" to turn with a screwdriver has been damaged, it is free to turn it seems, but, i cannot grip it,,,,so can I push on the rod from another location?

i was told i could get to the "rod" to push it down, by accessing it fromthe top? i will be fixing this problem properly asap monday,,,but just wanted to start the thing. in the sort term...haven't started it since I bought it!!!i il

i have a complete column with a key if you need to replace it.

you can pull the neck collar off and you can get to the rod. had the same problem with a 72 thunder birb.good luck..

Tonysl8t,,,i'll take you up op on the coloumn, i sent you a PM,,,,,

Thanks for the replies, I got it working ,,,temporarily,,,,i dropped the column a few inches, I could see the switch,,unscrewed the switch fom the column, let it dangle and I push the switch back and forth with a hand held "rod", ,,, so that is my current hot wire senario...gotta learn about columns now,,geez doesnt sound very fun,,,i'd rather be driving.

Tonys18t,,,,sorry bout the misprint and replied to the wrong guy,,still figuring out this message board stuff,,,i'm more comfortable with" cardboard on concrete" than computer stuff,,,,
