GM would, back in the day. The Camaro (and other models) was available with either a three speed or four speed manual trans.

if the clutch is not slipping then i would say u have a 4 speed trans and only making it to 3rd gear or u have a really low ratio rear end. 456 or 512. jack the back of the car up (both wheels) block the tires for safety and put in nutural and spin the wheel. if both wheels spin the same direction u have a posi and can do this by your self. if not it will take two people. spin the tire 1 revolution (both wheels need to turn the same direction) and count the number of times the drive line or shaft turns. if it turns about 4 and 1/2 times its a 456, a little over 5 and its 512. if it turns about 3 and 1/2 times its probly 342 and u are not getting to 4th gear or the clutch is slipping.

is the clutch slipping? when u punch it does it go right away or does the engine rev up and the car slowly picks up speed. im thinkin its got a really low rear end.

Default rpms

If rear is geared more than 373s I would go with a 5 Speed tranny.I'm running a 5 speed in my 70 nova.5 speed came out of 84 camaro, Running hydraulic clutch pedal.Main issue i had in conversion is had to modify header to install clutch cylinder to tranny.Every thing else was very simple.5 speed allowed good take off and cruised at 2000 rpms at 70 miles per hour.Just something that worked very well for me.
