Default 2nd Generation Pro Street Camaro Rear End Issues

Hello everyone,

I was looking for a bit of advice on an issue I am having with my rear end setup.

Here's what I'm working with:[/B] I have a 1978 Z28 Pro Street with a Ford 9" Rear End that's tubber and narrowed w/ 4.88 gears (no locker), 15 inch Weld Alumastar rims in the back with 33x21.5 inch tires, with a Muncie M22 Rockcrusher Transmission, with a 468 big block making in the area of 650 hp and 640 ft pounds of torque.

Here's My Issue: My rear end went on me. I'm getting many different opinions on how to fix it and what parts to use.

Here's What My Goal is: This is a street car, this car is NOT raced. I use it for hobby purpose such as cruises or going to shows. I do drive hard on the street sometimes and I like to enjoy the car and the power that it has. I never launch the car hard off a traffic light or from a deadstop and I never do burnouts or smokeshows. I occasionally will get on the car and go through the gears hard. I am looking for the best possible setup so that I can minimize the chances of this happening again.

I'm looking for opinions, advice and options here and I appreciate the help. This is my first time dealing with the issue of having a high hp/tq car with the tire size that it has in the rear and it being a street car! Thanks for everyone's time!!

Hot Rod just did an article this month on bolt in rears. I'll look after dinner and post what I find. What kind of money do you want to spend?

From what I've read a Currie or simular center section with a Detroit Locker are good to about 750hp. 31 spline axels are a must. Strange and Moser both built custom Dana 60s with 35 spline axels. You will not break one. If it ever dead hooks I'd bet the Muncie will fit in a 5 gallon bucket.

Dark - The car has 13k original miles on it and the body is all original sheet metal minus the hood...it's just really too nice of a car for me to take the chances that come with racing (thats just my opinion, I undestand everyone has their different feelings and i respect that completely)...I always dreamed of having a 78 pro streeted that was this nice of a car and I finally accomplished it

Nomad - That's exactly what I've been hearing, I've been told to go with a strange or currie third member with pro street gears and I would have no issues....one of the things i'm debating upon is the locker, i'm driving on the street and with the tire size i'm running i'm going to get wheel hop and noise on every corner I take with a locker...but then again going with no locker and putting a regular posi unit in there is going to have slight issues with the hp plus the tire size, the clutches in a posi just aren't meant to hold up to it.....i'm stuck between the best of both worlds ya know

Detroit true trac is the best of both worlds. I don't know the power rating though.

I've been very pleased with my locker, but mine is a Power Trax and I don't have anywhere near 750HP. I'm under 500HP.
