Default 1981 Engine and Transmission

How much would a 1981 engine cost and a 81 transmission cost? for a 81 Camaro. Does it have to be original stock. or canI use a different engine and trans? I was just wondering how much they would cost.

Depends what you find when it comes to cost for example I just talked to a guy in eastern ohio that has a rebuilt 350 I am fairly sure I could get for $550 probably a 300hp engine. Or you could look at a place like Pace who sells gm goodwrench engines for about $1800 (350 smallblocks dont waste your time with a 305) beyond this the sky is the limit. The second gen camaros can hold either a big block or a smallblock the smallblock is the most common. The trans common to the car is the th350 it is a good trans a th400 is stronger but requires crossmember work and driveshaft shortening. A th350 trans and converted can be bought for less than $800 I just seen Abruzzi advertizing a th400 for around $800 with performance upgrades.

you can bolt in any (except the new LSx engines) small-block engine into your car and it will fit on stock mounts and a turbo 350 tranny is your easiest and best bet, if you already had an automatic in there

The 1981 camaro that i am purchasing has a crate 350 and a th400 tranny in so really you have all the options in the world for it. Depends how much you wanna spend really
