1981 camaro rear end
I am buying a 1981 camaro and was wondering what i could do for the rear end. I was thinking a detroit locker. What do you all think about lockers and what type would be the best to get for a stock rear end.

Detroit TruTrac. The best of both worlds, hielical geared L/S. no cluthces to wear out, or additive to put in. Works like a L/S, but, locks up under load. virtually indestructable. The 8.5 10 bolt Trutrac requires 31 spline shafts. I don't think the 28 spline is offered anymore. I've installed a few of these differentials in customer vehicles and have one in the front of my 3/4 ton Chevy. I'm putting one in my 79Z.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with v8chvyguy. notice he says he's put them in the front of 4x4's. that is a part-time application and you are looking for something nice to drive everyday. also are you looking to have to custom build or are you just looking bolt-in? if bolt-in is your answer, then just keep with your stock housing and get a posi carrier and be done with it
the link I included will give you some opinions and insight to the TruTrac

Sorry, but, I think you may have misunderstood my post. I said I have one in the front of my Chevy, which spends all winter with the hubs locked. I also have a full locker in the rear. Now, I can tell you that there are a couple of vehicles driving around sourthern Illinois with TruTrac's in the rears, which I installed, Also, I can state that I have seen Thorsen hielical L/S's in factory optioned 4th gen Camaro's. I read through some of the thread you posted the link for and those guys are talking about offroading, that's abit different from bfay16's application. Yes, this type of L/S is not so good off road, but, niether are all the others. The best advantage to the TruTrac is it dosen't rely on a set of clutches to keep power to both wheels. Over time, clutches wear out reducing the units effectiveness and requireing more maintenance, such as more periodic diff service and inspection. Don't get me wrong, I will recomend an Auburn to anyone with a street car that asks, but, anything that is going to be raced or do alot of burnouts I would tend to shy way from anything with a clutch pack in it.
