Default 1980 spooled rear end

Hi Everyone, i am new here and new to camaro's. I just traded my 1992 GT mustang for a 1980 camaro, its super clean and well kept car. The one thing i notice is that it doesn't turn really good because of the spooled rear end. I would i go about changing it to posi instead? an i buy some gears or do i need all the gears? the rear end was just installed a few months ago! thanks for any help!!!! the camaro also has gear drive timing, not real use to all that noise. Are a they junk or good to have.

Well first off amazing decision on the trade lol, welcome aboard and as a new camaro owner. i dont know to much about rear ends (besides womens lol) but what i can tell you is that the timing gear is not that bad just anoying lol some people like it some don't their not ****ty though but i would personally rather a double roller timing chain.

Joe

good trade and welcome to the forum

yeah unless you plan on just racing it, i would get that spool out and get either a posi or locker differential. Do you know what gears are in it now? and yeah like Joe said, the gear drive isn't bad or anything but they can be annoying after awhile so it just depends on the persons preference.

got any pics of the car?

you can just keep the same gears and axles if you want and just change the differential to a posi or locker. what says you cant load the pics?

Welcome. You need more posts before you can post pics. Like 10 I think, it keeps spam out. I'm no fan of gear drives, they transfer unwanted crank harmonics to the camshaft. This can cause timing issues. If gears were better, then general would have put them in there in the first place. I would use the same gears just have the new rear set up properly.

If you don't mind the noise I'd keep the gear drive just because it's not hurting anything and saves some dollars. The posi unit is the way to go, but it's not just a case of removing the spool and installing the posi. You'll need to tear the rear apart, so be very careful to keep all the shims in their proper loaction or you'll have gear issues if anything gets moved or left out.
I'm actually going with a gear drive on my next small block project just because I want the sound and positive drive setup. I wouldn't put a gear drive in a car that's driven daily, or driven a lot.
