Default 1971 radiator coolant overflow

I have a 307SBC and noticed that it doesn't have a radiator coolant overflow. There's a hose underneath the radiator cap, but it just runs towards the floor. Did they use a tank back then?

It's not missing, they never came with one on 71.
You also don't fill the rad to the top. About 2" below the top is full.
