Thanks a lot for all the time and support from all you guys.

@Gorn, the insight above is fantastic and I am sure there is a solution hidden there. Unfortunately I am not handy on such stuff and half of it has gone over me, sorry :-(

I had dropped it to a 'specialist'. To my comfort today he informed me that he has figured out most of the issue. He says all the wiring was wrong, including the starter. He was able to crank it and start it. And he has corrected the wiring to the starter.

The issue still remains that from the ignition (from the key, after the 'red brake light'), if one tries to start the car, it is still dead. He says there is something wrong from the wiring / connection that goes from the ignition barrel to the Park Switch. He says he will try to find the issue and if unsuccessful he will put a 'push on/off button at the dash to start the car'. That, to me is not ideal. I would want the car to remain as 'original' as possible.

What do you guys think? What else could be going wrong here? Could the bad wiring have resulted in a faulty starter, a faulty ignition barrel, draining of two brand new batteries in three days? OR is there something more sinister going in the background.

Thanks once again for your ongoing support.

Cheers!!!

If he got it to crank and start I'm pretty sure your starter is fine and probably the battery as well, sounds like he's on track with the ignition wiring.
The car has to be in park to start if wired correctly, might be the wiring or the switch itself but probably the way it's wired.

There is no wiring that goes from the ignition barrel to the park switch. The key barrel turns, and pushes a steel rod that is on top of the steering column. The other end of the rod connects to the start switch that is also mounted to the top of the column, closer to the firewall. This switch could be bad, or out of adjustment.

@Camaro 69
Thanks a lot! Will check with the guy and request him to identify the issue there. He was definitely saying something about the Ignition Barrel right at the steering and also saying that there could have been something wrong at the firewall. Maybe he didnt mean a wiring. I hope he is able to identify that. I however feel that to investigate all of this it will be a much longer route and he may be tempted (in the interest of time) to just put a 'push button'. Do you think that would be ok ? (may be in the short term?)

I wouldn't want or do a push button if it was mine,I'd want to get it sorted out correctly.

To get it running is fine for the short term, until the problem gets sorted out. But I wouldn't make it permanent.

@Camaro 69 Thanks. Yes, I agree. If push button is the only solution as of now from this gentleman (he is around 35 minutes drive from my place), then I will live with it for the time being and try to get it reverted to original setting somewhere else.

Hi all,

I had posted my issues earlier about the car not cranking. Issue after issue :-(

now found out there is a small nylon gear at the back of the ignition barrel that is broken. Don’t know where to get this from. Already paid a lot of money in getting the ignition switch, sump gasket and a few other bits ordering online and shipping them fast.

many advice pls :-(. And work arounds?

I have attached pics for ref
