Replacing Org 396 with Build 502BBC in 67 Camaro RS/SS 396 4-spd
My 67 Camaro RS/SS has the original 396 and Muncie 4-speed. I pulled the 396/trans and have it on an engine stand for future use.
I built up a 502 BBC with GM perf parts short block, Bowtie Alum Head/Valves, Roller Rockers, Moroso Oil Pump and bigger Oil Pan, and Chevy Aluminum Mainifold, Holley 850, and a GM HEI distributor.
Ran the 502BBC on a test stand for a couple of hours to check it out, fix one small oil leak, adjust carb and set timing.
Bought an Autogear "M-23" 4 speed which is a beefed up M-22 design (1"Shafts, Stiffener plate, better synchros, etc).
Have it all installed in the Camaro and working to finish up the exhaust, fuel lines, and wiring. Can't wait to drive it!
Thanks - I actually love the gas mileage - MAYBE 6-8 mpg based on how quick it drained the five gallon tank on the test stand.
It sounds so nice after the carb adjustment, valve relash, and timing during the two hours on the test stand. I will put a video link here they are allowed:
Nice build, I dropped a 496 into my 69.
One thing and you probably noticed this, those tall valve covers may not clear the wiper motor.
I eliminated my motor and refuse to pay $800 for a small wiper motor so I don't drive mine in the rain .. LOL
Smart move holding onto the original drivetrain.
Good luck
Oh, I got you beat, my 496 only gets around 3mpg.... LOL
Thank you sir for the good tip on the wiper motor not fitting behind the tall valve covers. I like your strategy of no wiper motor and don't drive in rain. Pretty with forecasts today to avoid getting wet. Big engines and wet pavement equals High Risk of getting hit or making a mistake - just avoid it.
The 496 sounds like a great build - I will search your posts and read more about it!
Another thing to think about. In my 68, I had a 302 with a Muncie 4 speed. I twisted the body and put a crease in my quarter panel.
With that 502, you may want to add some bolt on frame connectors for added security so that you don't twist up that nice RS body.

That is a must with these cars and any real power, goes double for a big cube big block!
The guys that raced the original COPO 427's found out once they put tires on the back with some bite they needed a better mount for the rear and body support like a cage. The old guy that taught me alignment told me about several first gens running around town that could not be aligned. Apparently ever the stock big blocks could twist the body over time.
