Engine Oil for 383 Stroker
I just picked up a 68 camaro with a 383 stroker. From the research I have done I have about decided to go with a conventional 10W30. I do know the heads are Edelbrock Permorer RPM, but do not know what the cam is along with the rest of the valve train. What do you guys suggest as a safe oil to use in this application? Also, It has a 4 core aluminum radiator and I have read it is perfectly safe to run standard anti-freeze and distilled water 50/50. Double checking never hurts.
This is my first carbed engine, have always delt with LSX engines so I want to make sure I am doing everything correct.
Thanks

If your engine is using flat lifters, you may want to consider using one of the oils now being marketed for old muscle cars. These oils contain zinc, phosphorous and molybdenum for the protection of flat lifter cams. These additives are no longer used in most engine oils because newer engines no longer need them, as they are equipped with roller lifters.

Synthetic oil is better then conventional because synthetic is desighned not to break down as easily and can wit stand extreme temperatures weather it's hot or cold. But if you are using flat lifters You shouldn't use sythetic because it is to slick.

so I could just play it safe for now and use the oil with the zinc in it until I take the time to check the lifters? Is the Valvoline VR1 Racing Oil a good recomendation or overkill?
edit: did a little more reading and it sounds like VR1 in 20W50 is a good choice for a stroker
