An actual real SS? Could it be?
Ok, I just came across this car and here is my question. The paperwork in the car had the protect-0-plate attached to the original owner GM protection plan that came with my car. All the information including the VIN on the plan/plate match perfectly to my car including the VIN. The protection plan even has paper punch holes of my car VIN on it and the protect-o-plate left its imprint on it too. Now some say this can help determine if your car was a true ss but most owners throw them away, but by a stroke of luck I received all the paperwork on the car going back 40 years.
so here we go.
He are the protect-o numbers.
Location A Value=E Interior Black (this is a match)
Location B Value=R2 exterior Red (this is a match)
Location C Value=124678N328924 (1968 Convertible) (this is a Match)
Location D Value=R (Carb Rochester) (new Mani and carb)
*Location E Value=V1016MS (Flint Motor Oct 16th 350/295 eng /Manual)*
Now it's my understaning that this 350 was only optioned on a SS ?
thoughts anyone?
Location F Value=BS0930G **** "BS" Typo? Should be "PS" 3.55 Posi Chevy Gear/Axle
Location G Value=0
Location H Value=P8R13 Muncie 4 speed (this is a match)
Location I Value=BLANK
Location J Value=BLANK
Location K Value=3
Location L Value=BLANK
Location M Value=BLANK
Location N Value=BLANK
Location O Value=2
I have not stated on the engine codes yet but I am also hoping that it's a true SS (yeah I know dream on) But I was just wondering if looking at a protect-o-plate helps prove or disprove in case the engine was swapped? It does have 12 bolt rear end too. It's also drum all around but I am under the inpression that the 1968 SS could be optioned this way too.
Thanks for any help you can give me!

I would trust no paper work. It has been proven that it can all be faked to the point an expert can not tell the difference. Along with all the aging I have even seen coffee stains put on the fakes to make them look more real. There are a couple of places you can send in you vin number and what you want and they will make up all the records including maintenance history all for a few hundred bucks. I am not saying yours are not real I am saying they may or may not be but you can not prove it either way.
Does the car have the original motor? Is it numbers matching? And a 350? You got an SS. If no one else has done it before I get home I can post links to sites to help with what to check. The bad part is there is nothing made in 1968 that can not be clones. Engine numbers can be restamped even casting number can be changed.
Rotors where an option that had to be ordered extra on all except the Z28.
Even back in the 80s I saw this on High End cars. I knew a guy that collected 57 chevys. He loved the 57 duel four barrel rag tops. He found one in a desert junk yard it was just the carcass of the shell that I bet was there for 20 years. 80 K and one years later it was an all original numbers matching show car. Fully documented. When he brought the car in I asked how in the world did he find the correct motor/trans/rear he laugh at me. Knowing what I know now it was a pretty naive question. That was in 1988.

Thanks for the info!!
I guess we are looking at carbon-dating to prove paperwork now !! LOLOL
I have the information for the engine codes so I will check against that. the only reason I thought it might be real is because the car has been stashed in a garage the last 20 years collecting dust...
I guess either way I should just be happy to have a 1968 convertible camaro in such good shape and count my blessings. If this paperwork was forged I have to give it to them because it sure looks good!
I guy can dream right..

Gorn thanks so much!! great information there. It did answer my question as to why the inserts on my hood are black grill and not chrome. It appears that only the SS w/a 396 had the chrome stack emulation and the SS 350 had the black grilll so I guess my hood options are correct too.
There is so much for me to learn!!!
Thanks
Cole
