68' SS-396 Please look
My brother-in-law has offered me this car for 22K. It is in excellent shape. Has houndstooth interior, 12-bolt rear, 396. He says it is an original SS car but to me the hood isnt right. Shouldnt the hood have cowls? He said it's a RS SS...is this right? He isnt an expert and I am a Mustang fact guy...(please dont flame me...I'm new here)
Please take a look at these and tell me what you think. I am going to look up the VIN in the meantime.

The Super Scoop "cowl induction" hood was available as an option for late 1967 and all of 1968 Z28's only, as RPO code Z281.
By mid 1969, it was also available on the SS, in addition to the Z/28, as RPO code ZL2.
Finnster, you're going to do some digging to check on the SS-ness of the car.
The VIN will only tell you if it's a v8 or 6 cyl car. And the trim tag doesn't have any pertinent information either.
Check to see if the engine is a matching numbers block. There are numbers on a pad in front of the passenger side head.
Take everything down. If the block is matching to the car, it will have "partial VIN" numbers that match the serial # portion of the VIN tag on your car.
