Default 68 camaro help

I have resently aquired a 68 camaro ss and I am doing some research before tearing it apart. So far found out its its a 396ss with a four speed ,and a 12 bolt rear. It was built in van nuys its color is island teal with black houndstooth interior. I am tring to find out which 396 came in this car? Is the casting numbers in the same spot on a big block vs a small block? Having a hard time locating them. The car doesnt have AC and has a 7000 rpm tac that redlines at 6000 rpm. And also wanted to know if its rare for a 396ss to base wheels(look like copo wheels).? thanks. steve

Sounds like it could be a nice car to have, and valuable if it's legit. For the wheels and other options, it's hard to know or prove what the car came with if you don't have the original build sheet.
Here's some decoding info:

thanksfor the reply. I got the car from my uncle who past away and he was the second owner. He brought the car in 1971, I'm willing to place a bet that the car is pretty much orginal. But like you said trying to prove is another story. I have heard that GM hid build sheets in these cars, is this true? If so where at? Because if they did I'm also willing to bet its still there. thanks for all the help.

best to use the vin stamp off the block. the tach doesnt indicate anything because they put whatever was on the self into the car so it wont help much.

Pull the rear seat cushions before looking above the gas tank. It might be under the springs of the seat bottoms in back.
