Does anyone have an original 68 L78 car with an original alternator in it? I want to know what the alternator part numberis. I have seen references to 1100794 and 1100814 (which also belongs on a 68 Z28). The GM parts book indicates "all standard V8" is 1100794 but the L78 is not a "standard V8" but is a "High Performance" in GM's terms. Other books have listed the 1100814 alternator as the proper part for the L78 because it has a deep groove pulley which the Z28 also had.

Hi Camaro 69, Thanks for the website. Those numbers are copied directly out of the GM parts book which says 1100794 for ... all "Std V8". However, the L78396/375 was a "Special High Performance" V8 (in GM's terms).
My 68 L78 has the original numbers engine but the alternator was replaced years ago which is why I am trying to research this. I would believe the GM parts book except that every reference I have found indicates the 68 L78 had a deep groove pulley (like the 68 Z28). Also some GM literature I have neglects to list the L78 meaning that even GM missed things occasionally. The replacement alternator in my car has a deep groove pulley which was probably swapped off the original. It is possible that GM would install two different pulley sizes on the 1100794 alternator as they did in 1967 (the deep groove pulley was a separate part with its own P/N stamped on it). However Jerry MacNeish's 67-68 Z28 book says the 1100794 only had a standard pulley. Also, whywas the 1100814 alternator manufactured with a deep groove pulley with the same 37 Amp rating for just the Z28? Also, the 69 Camaro high performance cars (Z/28, 396 L78, etc) had its own 37 Amp alternator, 1100837.
An original 68 L78 car with all its original parts is the best way to find out.

I certainly wouldn't consider a 396 a standard engine. I interpret "standard" as pertaining to a "base" engine, not a hi-perf option.
For reference, Classic Industries sells "correct" replacement deep groove pulleys which came on the 67-69 302, 67 396, 68-70 396/375 hp, and a couple of 70-72 apps as well.
They give no reference to the alternator numbers though. And I too wondered why only a 37 amp on the 302 and 396? Was the thought to possibly reduce drag since these were "performance" models?
