What's the Best 5 or 6 Speed Complete Conversion kit available
I have searched the forum and not really found what I'm looking for.
I have a 69 Big block with M21 4-speed and 4.11 Gears... Needless to say Highway at 65 MPH is really not an option... So looking to put a 5 or 6 speed Tranny in thats more reliable and has overdrive for highway cruisin. Plus I'm sick of screwing with adjusting linkages...
I have heard and read about different conversion kits that supposedly come with everything...? I have heard Tremec and Keisler mostly.
Has anyone got any advice or suggestion on what kit to use? I really do not want to modify the trans tunnel.
Many Thanks in Advance!

I know what you mean about the highway rpm's with 4.11's. My 69 is an automatic, and I've been wanting to go with an overdrive. Mine was originally a manual trans car, and I've been seriously considering going back to manual. My d.d. is a stick and I enjoy rowing the gears. Anyway, my trans of choice would be the Tremec TKO 600 5 speed (600 is the torque rating). Places like summitracing.com sell the complete conversion kits for our cars, either with a .82 or .64 overdrive. The T56 Magnum 6 speed (not the weaker 4th gen T56) would be another option, if you really felt the need for a double overdrive, but they're a little pricier: $2,900 for the trans alone.

The 1-4 gears are the same between the two 600's, and 4th is 1:1 which is the same as where you were with the Muncie. So you want to think where you'll be happiest when in 5th. If you've dragged your car, where were the engine rpm's at the finish line? Was the engine begging for another gear 3/4's of the way down, or does it not really need much from a 5th gear? If it was primarily an around town car, hitting the strip once in a while, and hitting the highway even less, then you might be happier with the .82. But if you plan on some highway trips, long or short, you'd probably be happier with the .64. The way my car is set up, I'd definitely go with the .64. A .82 overdrive wouldn't be enough of a drop for me to make it worth the expense. I feel that with the 4.10 gears and the .64 overdrive, that's going to give me the best of everything; a lower 1st gear than my TH350 has, an extra intermediate gear, and overdrive.

Your tire diameter plays a role in your speed to rpm ratio in addition to the gears. My tires are 26.5" dia. With 4.10 gears and a .64 overdrive, rpm's would be right around 2,000 @ 60 mph. Much better than the present 3,250. With 3.73 gears, rpm's at 60 mph would be a little under 1,900. Or with the .82 overdrive and 3.73 gears, around 2,400 rpm. With the .64 overdrive, 4.10 gears would be my choice.

Guys you can go on Keisler's web site and they have a caculator for 1st and 5th gears with different diff ratios and tire sizes. I have a 69 yenko with a GMPP crate 454 and a TKO 500 it turns around 2000 rpm at 60mph with the .64 gear in 5th. Love it!!!
