OK, I've been struggling to get the brakes working properly on my '68 for over a year. Last summer I replaced the old bolt on style rotors with new one piece rotors from Classic Industries. I decided to replace the bearings at the same time. I've experienced numerous problems with getting the brakes operating properly but today I want to eliminate one variable.

First, when I reinstalled them I noticed that the center divider on the split calipers was not even with the center of the rotor. Thinking this was a problem with my new install I took my original rotors with the original bearings and put them back on this weekend thinking I would have the centers aligned. Surprisingly that is not the case and they exhibit the same off center installation which strikes me as wrong. Since nothing is different on these parts and these brakes used to work fine what could I be doing wrong in the reassembly?

What kind of brake problems are you having?

 

A variety; on start up the brake pedal is soft but stiffens up and starts to act normally after a short drive.
A pull to the right on medium to hard application.
Finally after it gets warm the right front starts to lock up.

This one has me pulling out my hair.

 

First, swap pads per sides, then try brakes.
If no improvement, then continue below.
Second, remove LF bleeder screw, apply grease about threads and re-install.
Bleed the bejesus on LF caliper.
Is LF hose in good shape? Replacing it is simple.

 

Thanks I'll keep these suggestions in mind. But I am still trying to understand why my calipers would not be dead center on the rotors. I'd like to verify that bit of the installation before moving on to the other issues.

 

You may have to use a C-clamp and move caliper to the left in picture.
Pistons are out kindda far. Or use a couple long prybars and pry it over, or remove caliper and C-clamp the pistons.
