Default How Low are you guys running?

I'm about to wrap up the '67 and my CPP big brake kit came with 2" drop spindles (yeah, I know) and I was going to add a 1" lower spring (for a total of 3" drop) and I'm thinking that if I run 18's and a 26" tire? That it wouldn't be too lower to drive around on the street.

In the rear I'm about to order dropped leaf springs. I want to go 3" but just not sure. My car sits stock height now with 235/60R14 tires on 7' rally wheels. There is just over 2" between the top of the tire and the fender lip. I'd like to just "tuck" the top of the tire up inside the lip, but not quite the top of the rim.

Doable? I'm afraid 2" won't be low enough (since most of my drops have been 3" or 4" on my last 3 rides) but I don't want any scraping or rubbing of the tires. =)

So, where are you guys at? Going with bags is way out of my budget. Here's the stance on my car now. Or at least the tires.

I have a 1979 Z-28 RS Camaro . It has a Vette Brakes C-4 Corvette adjustable monoleaf suspension. And a 1981 El Camino SS with Rancho springs all away around , Both have about 3"of clearance at the cross member., Both have had had 15-17 inch diameter wheels. The Camaro has Doug Thorley "big Tube" headers. And the El Camino (my daily driver ) has Flow tech "shorty" headers. Because of the "wonderful roads" we have,.And you have to compromise because of that. Both cars have that lowered "look" about them. So you might have to run a taller rim /tire combination to get it.Its up to you.And good luck.

Sweet Zspoiler. That looks like one of the old ISMA front bumpers. Or was it ISSCA? Either way, the late 70s - early 80s racing car look. That helps with the car looking low for sure.
So, WA has "those" roads too? Lol. Down here they've stolen all the money to fix our roads for decades and "now" want us to pay again to fix them. It might be time to move. Lol

Yeah, my '65 was lowered 4" and was just a little too low. I'm thinking 3" might be the magic number for now. Like you said, a taller tire (45 series vs 40 series) might make a difference once I drop it back on the ground.

Thanks for sharing. I appreciate it. I'm just trying to put the "fattest" tires/wheels on the car for looks & handling AND "not" have it rub so the wife can enjoy the car too. Oh well. Time to roll the dice and just get it back on the road.

The nose was part of a kit from Fibremotive Fiberglass .So you could build your own IMSA car. I bought the nose but when I had the money to buy the wing and the flare, they were discontinued. So I went to option # 2.And built my own version of Bill Mitchell "the hugger" and some other "tuner cars of that era.I haven`t seen any like it around here. And the nose does work .I can feel the difference,

Ha, IMSA. I was close. Looks good though. And if you could only get 1 piece of the puzzle, that was the one to get.

My 73 was just a stock body that was smoothed out and molded in. No door handles, no emblems other than the LT & Rally Sport lettering. It was a fun car I wish I'd never sold. But isn't that what we say about ALL of our cars?

Thanks

You could always go for the Trans Am / SCCA road racer look.

Ha, my wife is going to be driving this one. I'm looking for a '68-'69 for the next project. She wants to have all 3 eventually. =)

Ha. Funny thing. I've built probably 8-10 cars since I got married 35 years ago. 2 Camaros. And of all the cars, trucks I've built, I ALWAYS said I'd never build the same car twice. You never learn anything new if you do. Now, way back in the day I built about 12 VWs when they were a dime a dozen. Which I had a few now. Lol.
This will be the first time I build (and keep) several 1st gen Camaros and I can see where you can do things faster, cheaper and different on every one.

We'll have to see how this one comes out though. Since the wife will be driving this one, the next ones will get a little more of everything.

Oh, forgot to add. Pulled the trigger. New drop coil springs arrived today. 3" lowered leaf springs for the rear should be here Friday or Saturday. So things are coming in just about the right time.
Now if it was only 20+ degrees cooler around here. Lol
