Disconnect coupler at steering shaft - MARK the two before separating - then slide the cover over the end, install cover into firewall.

Default boot cover

there is a lever at bottom of steering and getting it past it is my concern, I don't want to stretch it and possibly wreck the new boot

Default Different car, same problem.

Did you ever figure this out? I am facing the exact same thing right now on my '70 Nova SS. The car has been apart for years so I have no reference point. The only picture in the assembly manual makes it look as though the boot goes on the inside of the firewall. But I do not see that working with the other seal that is on that side. Nothing on the Nova site so I am over here to see if anyone has a clue. The part is the exact same part # for F & X bodies.
