wiring new distributor and coil

I have a 1968 Camaro with 350 SBC. I recently purchased a Speedmaster 8020 Series Distributor and an FAST PS60 coil to upgrade the car from Points and Condenser to electronic ignition. My original Distributor had only two wires coming out (Red and Black) and both were wired to the Negative Side of the original coil. The new Distributor has a Red, Black and an Orange wire coming out of it.
The original coil had the Red/Black from the Distributor on the negative post, a beige (or perhaps originally white) wire to the positive post, and another wire to the negative post (I think for the Tach, but not sure).
My problem starts here - I thought the Red from the distributor would go to the Positive on the Coil -then the Black would go to the negative on the coil - and I was told that the orange was probably a feed for the Tach, so I connected it to the wire lead that I thought was the tach on the original set-up. I also attached the beige (or perhaps originally white) wire to the positive post. When I hooked up the battery and started to crank the motor to see if I was close on the timing, I started to see the telltale sign of burning wires near where the wires go into the firewall. I caught it right away, and disconnected the battery to prevent any further shorting or smoking of the wires. The starter was cranking.
Any help from someone in the know would be appreciated.
