67-70 Mustang rearend drum to drum width is 59-1/4". 68-79 Nova rearend is 60-1/4". That makes the Ford rearend 1/2" narrower on each side. It will fit with his current wheels providing they now have more than 1/2" of clearance on the back side. Leaf spring mount placement, and whether they need to be moved, is something you can determine with a tape measure.

I should have said wheels like what he has (same backspacing) not the very ones he has, because the Mustang wheel bolt pattern is 4.5" vs the Chevy 4.75".

One other option for a very strong rear end for CHEAP is the ford exploder. It is a 8.8 with 31 spline axels and are all over in the yards. Early ones come with the drum brakes and the later ones with disk. Most have posi. and good gears, look up the gear ratio and locker if it has one on the door plate. They are also the 59 something for back spacing and leaf spring perches. Also a 4 1/2 bolt pattern but that can be changed to the GM 4 3/4 pattern if needed.

If going with a Ford Exploder rearend, know that the pinion yoke is offset to the passenger side by almost 4". With all things being parallel, this won't cause vibrations, but keep it in mind for checking driveshaft tunnel clearances in the back.

Take the axles and get them re-drilled to a Chevy bolt pattern.
