Default Trouble starting big block

I'm having trouble starting my 68. I have a new jegs mini starter on it. What happens is it seems like the pinion gear on the starter won't line up with the flywheel gear. Then the starter just pushes the pinion out into the flywheel. I can go under the car, spin the pinion gear by hand and eventually get it to fire up.

I have tried shimming the starter out away from the flywheel and it came with a couple shims that go between the engine and starter thus lowering the starter maybe .05".

It just seems odd that it won't spin into the flywheel. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Chris.

Well I pulled the mini starter off, rebuilt the Oem starter and all is well. Mini starter on a big block must not work very well.
