Having a tough time finding the proper starter for the rebuilt engine I am installing in my 69 RS convertible. Non original engine was built for the car, all correct date and cast codes. Block is 3932388. Set up is 4 speed with new 153 tooth flywheel and 10 1/2 inch clutch. Starter called for by most sources is 1108338 Delco. That unit does not make it. There are 3 mounting holes. Far hole is 3.25 inches from either of the holes located toward the block. The 8338 starter does not line up with the mounting holes. The starter holes are spaced the same, but the locations of the holes in the block are further away from the block by 3/4 of an inch.

 

A Chevy engine takes one of two starter configurations, depending on how the block is drilled.
If the mount holes are in a straight line, you need a starter with that type of straight mount, and need to use a 153 tooth flywheel.
If the mounting holes are at an angle, you need the angle mount starter, and need to use the 168 tooth flywheel.
Which type of mounting holes does your block have?

 

Both. Three holes, 2 in line, 2 on angle. But neither positioned to accept the starters I have brought home.

 

Ok nice, you have the less common dual drilled block. Can you post pics of the starters?

 

Never mind, no need for a picture. The Delco 1108338 you're trying to use is an angle mount and won't reach your 153 tooth flywheel.
You need a straight mount starter, which will hug the block more, and will reach your flywheel.

 

For your own peace of mind:

 

I have seen that article in my research. None of those starters mate up. I have the 621 bell housing and Gm shield, and when you look into the starter hole you see exactly what you should; the edge of the flywheel just off center of the hole. When you look at that hole in the shield vs the mounting holes in the block, the hole nearest the drivers fender is centered 3/4 inches off the edge of the pilot hole in the shield. Every starter I have seen has the hole for that position in line with the edge of the nose.

 

Not sure this clears things up for me. Pic shows a more consistent alignment with the 8338 then I had perceived. Wondering if the nose is pushing against the bell housing keeping the starter from making the mounts.

 

Pic doesn't show the starter. Can't say what's in your way without being under there myself.
Again, the angle mount 8338 starter is not the right one for a 153 tooth flywheel.

 

i feel your pain had same problem tried lots of starters was told it was because i was useing 10 1/2 bellhoueing 403 # ( my motor is 396) should have been 11 inch cant remember what starter we used i think it was from a 70 nova small block if you have not got the right one yet let me know i could ask the son inlaw what we used he has a better MEMORY
