Yes you do, it's also referred to as a stabilizer rod. The back end of the rod has a slotted hole and bolts through the shifter and into the crossmember shifter bracket. The front end of the rod is threaded and attaches to a bracket that's bolted to the upper left tail housing mounting flange on the trans. It's put together on the rod: locknut-washer-bushing-trans bracket-bushing-washer-locknut. Without the rod, your shifter could pop out of gear due to transmission flex. That's why guys tended to prefer the trans mounted shifter better.

Does your tunnel have the factory hole for the shifter?
On my previous 69, I heated up the shifter shifter arm and gave it a dog-leg right to center it. Otherwise it would come up more near the left corner of the tunnel. Unless you're getting a different design.

my car had a auto on the floor from the factory the guy that had it before me put the 4 speed in the indy shifter he had in there mounted to the tail of the trans like the new one so i hope the hole is in the right spot but i dont know the floor is very clean i hope i dont have to cut any .what are the odds

Check the mating gear also.
If going from an auto to manual, you would have to move the reverse back-up light switch, buy one for a manual 4-spd, from the shifter to the trans.
Need the harness to go with it as the plug is in the firewall by the gas pedal and external harness follows the trans bolt and out back to the switch.
