From a price point of view if the current owner cannot prove to you that the car is the real thing then there is no way you can prove to another buyer in the future that the car is real. For value sake you should assume it’s a clone. The detail in some of the clones is amazing. These days Collectors want to see a history of the car dating back to the original owner. But even that is being faked now. 10 years ago there was a few experts that could pick out the fakes because of little known factory details but most of those have been brought to light. The internet makes the information easy to find. That does not mean the cloning itself does not add value to you just don’t think you are going to run the car to a high end auction and pull 60K like the other cars that looks just like it.
A skilled restoration house can replace any panel on the car so even an expert cannot tell the repair/modd was ever done. Even matching number does not mean much without a history because blocks can be renumbers and casting numbers can be welded. There was a guy a few years back that built a fully documented 69 Z28/RS convertible. GM only built one Z28 convertible and that was in 68 and we know where it is. But based on all the forged documents and the car his car was a factory original numbers matching car. He did it to show it could be done and even did a build thread. There is nothing GM made that was designed to be hard to forge and the law only protects the VIN number. Histories are the hardest things to fake because it involves people and places and to some extent can be verified.

If it's got the 4 piston calipers on the front/ rear it's worth buying on that alone!!R/S cars have the back-up lights in the rear body valance as opposed to the tail lights. It should also have a 12 bolt in it if it is a Z/28.If it is a Z,it has to be a 4 spd as all Z's were 1st Gen. No a/c as well for these cars.No if,buts,or maybe's on both circumstances.
