Default Reverse engineering

If you've read any of my other posts (which are very few), you'll know I bought a 67 RS about a month ago. It was more or less an impulse buy, and I didn't do the proper research and inspection of it prior to purchase. Now I have a car that has a LOT of potential, and is in relatively good condition, but I know almost nothing about it. What can I do to 'reverse engineer' it, and learn all I can without completely tearing it apart? Looking for serial numbers, or any quick-n-dirty tricks to determine what exactly I'm driving.

Here's what I know so far:
1967 Camaro (badged as an RS, but that doesn't mean much)
4-speed transmission (Hurst shifter)
383 sroker motor
MSD ignition (haven't traced the wiring, so I don't know exactly how it's set up)
Factory speedo & fuel gauge in dash
Aftermarket water temp, voltage, and oil pressure gauges in the front of the center console

Also a newbie question: After I shut off the car, it will continue to idle/diesel for several seconds before the motor finally stops turning, and occasionally backfires when doing this. Is this normal, or a problem that can be fixed or minimized?
Thanks for the help, and I hope this all doesn't make me sound retarded!

If you look at the trim tag, its located in the engine compartment, behind the brake booster, on the fire wall, there is a bunch of info there. Also the vin number will be a little helpfull. The engine block numbers are also helpfull. There is a thread posted to the top of the 1st gen page that has a bunch of links and stuff for figuring out the numbers and what they mean.

The registration. The trim tag on mine is inside the driver's side door-frame though, not the engine compartment

what are you wanting to know about the car?... it has a 383, so what ever it was, it's now just a 67 camaro unless you take it back to what it was in 67. If you go to yearone.com you'll find alot of info there on where to find #'s and what they mean.

I am not sure but the trim tag should be in the compartment. Maybe a PO moved it for some reason. What does it say?

Sould be something like:

67 n7d
123477NXXXXXXX
XX XXX
XXX zzz

Or something like that.
