Re wiring a 68 RS
I have a 68 RS, looking to restore and 1 item is to replace the wiring harness. Everything works but due to the age and some splicing I thought it would be beneficial at this time. The original harness for front to back seems to be very expensive. I have done my 63 and 64 Corvette for ½ the cost of the Camaro. I have noticed that there are some aftermarket harnesses for a lower cost. Any experiences or recommendations will be appreciated. Would like to go original but not opposed to aftermarket. What harnesses are the best?
Does it really need a whole harness or is the spliced areas located in the same general area? You could do what's needed. My 68 rs still has all the original wiring and everything still working so I would replace what is needed instead of the whole car.
Summit Racing was producing a wire harness under their name that was the same as the Painless brand harness. It was a few hundred dollars cheaper and the same quality. I got one for my 69 camaro that is waiting to be installed. Each wire is labeled as to what it is and all wires are bundled into 3 sections(Engine Compt., Passenger Compt., and Rear of vehicle). It comes with a new fuse block and relays already installed. I think, if I remember right, the only thing you have to re-use is the factory connectors for the guages and lights.
Like I said, I haven't installed the wiring yet, so I don't know how hard/simple it will actually be, but it seems that they have done everything possible to make it user friendly.
