Problem Areas?
Hello! I am new to the Forum and have a few questions. I am looking at buying a 1967 Camaro Convertible RS/SS 350. I was wondering if anyone might be able to tell me where some of the problem areas on the car would most likely be? Does anyone know how many RS/SS Convertibles were produced in 67? The car has been in storage since the early 80’s. Before storage I am told that it came from the south. The gentleman says that the car is matching numbers but I have not had the time to look into the numbers yet. By giving it a quick look over it seems to be pretty solid. There are no holes in the panels, the trunk is solid, and the floor seems solid as well.
I would like to thank anyone in advance for your help! I greatly appreciate it!

Eveything depends on the previous owners and life of the car, did they drive it hard, did it sit outside, sunny california south or wet and rainy florida south, etc. etc.
I would suggest taking a look at a few of the threads in here where people are completely redoing thier 1st gens and see where the common problems lie.
Hope I was as vague as possible

That is a tuff one. First I would have to ask you what is impotant to you? Is this an investment? If so you should get the car looked at by a Pro that knows classic cars. Short of that you should take it to a real mechanic. Not a friend of a friend that really knows cars.
To see if its a real RS/SS 350 67 has a cowl tag with all the options defind. After 67 the cowl tag were not as detailed.
I assume you can look and find rust. The rocker pannels are critical on a convertible. A rag top with rust issues on the rockers should not be driven. There should be a center brace that bolts across the trans tunnel. Many of these where removed cause they interfear with 2" and greater exhaust.
You want to make sure the tops frame is not bent. If you ever want a show car these things can be tuff to get straight again. Infact mine has about a 1/4 twist to it. The guy that did the top hide it the best he could.
See if the oil canisters are still there. These where removed on many of these cars to reduce weight. How are the hid aways? they work? converted to Vacuum? If they don't work but you can move them that means the gears are striped. If it does not workany you can not move them it could be anything.
Just because it have been instorage since the 80s does not mean itis real or orginal. In the 80's there was a lot of people restoring/upgrading first gens. I can remember in high school (81-82)the mopar guys saying there where more 67 Z28's now that where ever made in 67.
To the best of my knowledge there is no count on how many RS/SS 350 convertibles where made in 67. You can find out how many SS's or RS's and how many convertible where made. I have not found any info on how many of those where sold in combination. If I remember right just under 20K rag tops where sold in 67.

Yes. There are a few of them and I would also suggest that you take a wander through the other threads and check them out.
I can only speak for my own camaro which is a coupe, but I am sure that all of the lower corrosion issues translate over to the ragtop. Okay, so here are the spot s that i would look at knowing what i know now...
Rocker panels
Fwd portion of the Wheel wells
Rear frame rails where they attach to the aft crossmember (or tail pan)
Edges of the trunk where they meet the inner wheel wells
Along the fwd edge of the trunk opening
Floor panels
the bottom of the plenum on the passenger side
all around the windshield esp. the bottom
Look for cracks in the forward firewall near the heater box
Bottoms of the doors
Now that I think of it. Pretty much the ENTIRE CAR.

Thank you for the information. I plan on looking at the car again this weekend and I will look at all of the things you have mentioned. I have looked at the trim tag and it does confirm that it is an SS/RS 350.Thanks again for your help!

If you ever come back I would like to know the asking price? Seems the value of these thing if tuff to figure out. You don't seea lot of RS/SS rag tops that are the real deal for sale.
The gentleman is asking $12,000 for the car. It would need to be restored butfrom the quick look that I gave it the other day it seems to be a solid car.To me this sounds like a reasonable deal especially if it is matching numbers. What are some of your opinions?
VIN: 124677N******
Trim Tag:
12B
67-12667 NOR
765-Z Y-2
WDL 2BG3SL
4P 5B
Today I went to look at the car again. The partial VIN stamped on the block does match the VIN of the car along with the suffix MS.
I could not get to the transmission to see the numbers on it. I am told that it is a 3 speed.
When I looked at the rear end I was surprised. It has a 10 bolt instead of a 12 bolt. The casting numbers on the axle center sectionis 3894859NF. It does not have amounting point for the radius rod.Did all the SS cars have 12 bolts or were some equipped with 10 bolts?
The Rochester carburetor (4MV)is number 7027212. From my source thisis off a 1967 Camaro with an A/T with out A.I.R.
The heads on the car are not"double hump" heads. They look to have more of a point to them like a pyramid. I did not take the vale covers off to check the casting numbers. Maybe off a 283???
The intake and exhaust manifoldsare the correct casting number for the car. The water pump is correct also.
As far as the condition of the car goes, overall it's pretty solid. There is a dime sized hole in the trunk pan. The floor pans all seem to be in good condition with only minimal rust, no holes that I could see.The frame appears to be solid. I am told that all the gauges work except the clock because it is missing. The tack red lines at 5500 RPM and the numbers have the green tint to them. Also I am told hideaways work and the power top works. The car still retains all of the "cocktail shakers". The front of the car has disk brakes. Would this option appear on the trim tag? Below is a link to photobucket where you can look at some pictures. I must say the pictures from under the car make it look like a rust bucket. Most of the rust is all on the surface. If anyone has comments please feel free to post them. Take Care!!

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing....
My research tells me that everything is right except teh color should be Butternut Yellow... I might have messed that one up... So maybe someone else can say either yes or no on that.

Wow great pics. From my experience it seems like this is a pretty solid car but I am not an expert when it comes to whats going on underneath. I havent gotten that far with mine, we are just in the process of restoring the chasis but I do know that the frame is solid on mine.
