Default Power Steering Box Size

Hi,

I am trying to gauge if I will have any problems installing the power steering box in my 1967 Camaro. See the attached picture. I have 1/8 clearance between the header and my manual steering box.

Does anyone know if there is a size difference between the manual steering box and power steering box in the dimension shown in the picture?

Thanks!
Chris

I have the same question for my '69 with a 502 crate. My Hookers had to come off to put new steering box in but now want power steering.

There are kits for converting and then there are these rack and pinion kits if you want great steering. https://www.rickscamaros.com/1967-69...super-kit.html

Roger. I've seen the kits but nobody from the sellers can verify the dimensions of the power unit. I only have .25" clearance btwn current man box and headers. Love those headers when the right foot is involved; would love to throw them in a smelting oven whenever the box wrench is in hand.

thx for the links

In my case the PS box was actually narrower than the manual.

Do you know what the steering ratio is on your PS box? Or if it is a series 400, 500 or 600?

I have a 67 Z/28 manual box on my 69 Camaro. Out in my shed I have the original P/S gear box (variable ratio) in a box. I'll bring it in the garage in the morning and measure the overall width.

Measuring from the upper front mounting flange at frame to the most inward edge of steering gear housing (closest to engine) comes to 4 7/8".

I realize this is a pretty old thread but I'll go ahead and post in case anyone uses the search function and need to know in the future.

There is a size difference between the 2 boxes but not much.

I measured both with my caliper so Ill let you do the math and see if its 1/8" or not

Thanks for posting that info. I ended up putting a close ratio p/s box in my '69 (BB 502) w/ Sanderson Blockhuggers. Had to file down part of the p/s unit AND dent a header tube to get .25" clearance.

But oh is the power steering so worth it....
